Let's get something out in the open. I currently work a normal 9-5 type engineering job with a wonderful chemical company in the Detroit area. With the 9-5 lifestyle, little time is easily available for travel to other places, so I often get antsy with wanderlust. Over the labor day weekend, I had the amazing opportunity to visit good friends in the Madison, WI area, and let me tell you Madison, Wisconsin is wonderful!
Making it into the Madison area at around 10 PM central time left me to hop on the town with a few more hours to the Friday night. Nothing like having a good beer next to the capital building with a great friend.
Hitting up the Great Dane after Coopers tavern allowed for finishing off of my Friday Night, but I had to make sure not only the finish it off with a terrific smoked porter on cask. I shared a healthy basked of famous cheese curds. I mean, it's not like I can go to Wisconsin and not get cheese curds.
Waking up in Madison on the couch of in my great friend Jon's apartment, I found myself hankering for a huge breakfast. Finding a place that was as least chain like as possible we found Mickie's Dairy Bar. This place was fantastic with great prices. Very much in the style of a 1950s diner, we sat at the bar, and had what could only be described as the largest pancakes this side of the Mississippi.
After breakfast - with a dire need to walk off what was a carb heavy meal, we found our way to the Terrace in Madison. This outdoor pavilion right on lake Mendota, is a real treat of the area. The beautiful lakeshore views, the quintessential colorful chairs, and the outdoor bar make this a great mid day hangout for anyone.
After an amazing 35,000 steps on Saturday, Sunday allowed for a bit more relaxing high calorie eating activities. While I was in the area, I was lucky enough for the Taste of Madison event. Many of the local restaurants and farms came to the capital square to give small samples of the wonderful food of the area. I may have eaten about a million little samples. Finishing off the taste of Madison was best done with a good drink around the capital square.
I must say the Madison area is a fantastic area to live and visit. I only wish I could have spent more time really getting to explore more of the area in detail, but still I am beyond happy I was able to see it. Weekend trips are an amazing easy to do get away for anyone. Take a few hours, pack a bag and just go!
