Log004: Soylent

Log

It’s  been said to be the end of food as we know it.  It has been feared because, “it may be made of people.” In any case, if it is the food for utopian or dystopian futures, Soylent is a quick, easy, and nutritious food source, so let’s dig further into it.

A week ago I undertook a challenge, I wanted to see how I would react to an all Soylent Diet.  So, I purchased 36 bottles of Soylent 2.0, and let this week ensue.

THE LIFE

I think this may be the most interesting part of Soylent.  The life of eating Soylent is a little different because of the extra time in your day.  Now this may not be true for all people, but prior to my Soylent challenge, I would home cook all of my meals.  This would normally take a couple of hours a day to do.  On Soylent, these times were zero.  Additionally, with Soylent 2.0 being a self contained drink, I had no dishes to do during this week.

Again, this may not be the case for everyone.  In fact, I would say it is more likely a special case for me, but I do not have a dishwasher.  This leads me to normally spend around a half hour, or so, each day doing dishes.  With this time again added to my day to do things.  I was able to get out to go on a longer daily walk.  I was also able to get everything done I wanted to during my after work time which lead me to much more easily sleep eight hours a day.

I’d like to emphasize that the, “LIFE,” aspect of Soylent would definitely be different for every person since not every person is dumb like me, and rents a duplex without a dishwasher or cooks every meal at home.

I may have got into the habit of drawing on my Soylent bottles

Verdict

After a week of drinking this stuff, I must say its really not all that bad.  I actually kind of enjoyed the extra time that I got in my day to do other things I love.  On Soylent, I feel fine and full, and can easily portion food.  To be honest, I will continue to have Soylent, albeit not exclusively, in the future.

Some criticisms I do have are the fact that Soylent 2.0’s fiber is far too low for the recommended number of bottles a day.  Additionally, while so very convenient, Soylent does produce a fair amount of waste in the number of bottles consumed each day.  I will give credit to Rosa Labs for making the packaging as minimal and recyclable as it is, but it does still produce a fair amount of bottles for recycling, re-purposing, or piling up (i.e. as you may see in my room).

Thanks so much for reading, if you want to try Soylent and like this blog please click on the links above to support its content!  Also, comment below with other thoughts for re-purposed used of old Soylent bottles.  I found I liked to draw on them, thoughts?

THE TASTE

The taste of Soylent is something I can only describe as both good and not good.  It’s creator, Rob Rhinehart describes the taste as minimal, and in reality, I would have to agree.  It is rather a taste you may expect from putting whipping cream on cheerios, and then just drinking that milk.  Or maybe, blending those cheerios into that cream with a blender then drinking this mixture.  That would best describe the texture of sorts.  It’s really just a thicker soy milk.

To be honest, I rather enjoy the taste.  The minimal taste is something that I didn’t find myself getting tired of.  The slightly sweet beverage is something that I don’t really crave, and this helps to control portioning.  You won’t find yourself mindlessly drinking this, and therefore, won’t over eat Soylent.
