Recipe: Homemade Greek Yogurt

IMG_0014.jpeg

A simple recipe that lets you make a weeks worth of Greek yogurt for the price of a half gallon of milk!  Additionally, this recipe could use Soy milk potentially.  It is something that I have personally not tried; however, could still work.  Let me know the results if you do try!

Items Needed:

  1. Slow Cooker

  2. Half Gallon of milk to your preferred fatness level

  3. 1 small cup of plain Greek Yogurt (Starter)

  4. A cooking thermometer

  5. A 12 x 12 inch piece of Aluminum Foil

Directions:

It’s true all you need to make great Greek yogurt is in the picture above.  Well, I suppose a strainer would be very helpful, and that is not pictured, but let’s not discuss that.  The key factor in making yogurt is to control the temperature of the bacterial culture you will be making in your crock pot.

However, before you can start controlling temperature like a pro.  You need to first pasture the milk.  The easiest way of doing this is to simply put the milk in the slow cooker, and turn the slow cooker on to high.  When the temperature reaches 180 degrees simply turn off the slow cooker, and let it cool back to 105 degrees.  Once this happens, it is time to be a temperature controlling pro that grows beautiful bacteria.  At this point, we will be needed to add the small amount of Greek yogurt to the slow cooker.  These will be the pioneers in our new Greek yogurt.

Put the yogurt into the slow cooker, then simply let the mixture sit about about 105 degrees for 8 to 12 hours.

After the 8 to 12 hours, you will get a pile of yogurt and water separated in the slow cooker.  This is shown above.  Remember when I said that you may, you know, need a strainer?  Well this is the point where that would come in handy.  I would suggest placing coffee filters in a strainer, and pouring the unfiltered yogurt through the filters to get just the yogurt.  After all of this is done, you have beautiful, healthy, and cheap yogurt for the week.

As I did above in the image, I would suggest adding a bit of fruit to your yogurt for a healthy way of sweetening the yogurt.  As a final note, for future batches of Greek yogurt, you don’t need to buy the starter Greek yogurt.  Save a small tablespoon of your last batch for use in the next.  Happy Yogurting
